Frequently asked patient questions

  • Public Vs Private Hospital option?

Our surgeons operate predominantly at Hurstville Private Hospital and The Mater. Our Urologists are committed to providing excellent care to both insured and non-insured patients. Admission as a Private patient entitles you to the option of choosing your preferred treating doctor regardless of whether you are treated in a Public or a Private hospital.

Should you elect to be admitted as a public patient in a Public hospital, you are not given the option of choosing your preferred doctor and your operation may be performed by a Registrar or Fellow training in this field of expertise.

Urology Sydney provides an on-call service to all patients admitted as a private patient so you can be assured of a prompt response to your needs at all times. Your operation date is discussed and arranged in consultation with you. Admission as a private patient can incur expenses in addition to those rebated by Medicare or your health fund.

  • What is an Estimate of Fees?

We provide you with an estimate only of the fees charged by this practice to indicate likely costs at the time of consultation and/or surgery. Should you require in-hospital or Day Surgery elective procedures our quote does not include services provided by other doctors, anaesthetists, surgical assistants, radiologists and / or pathologists. Quotes are exclusive of all costs associated with your hospital accommodation, pharmacy and / or physiotherapy. You will be required to pay a deposit prior to your surgery. All final accounts are 30 day terms.

  • What will my procedure cost?

This will depend on what procedure is performed on the day of your admission and this will be dependent on what the surgeon finds.

  • What is the role of The Urology Practice Nurse?

Our Practice Nurse establishes a relationship with you immediately following your consultation. This provides support and education throughout each step of the process from diagnosis and investigation through to treatment and post operative care.

  • What should I expect at my consultation?

The Consultant will take a history from you and question you about your current concern. The doctor may request additional diagnostic investigations including pathology and / or radiology tests after your consultation. Should additional investigations be required our staff will endeavour to assist you in organising these tests on the day of your visit.

Please note that we cannot discuss any patient medical matters with any other family member without written approval by the patient. You are more that welcome to bring other family member with you at your time of consultation.

Patients that are of a non-English speaking background and that do not speak or understand English well, we encourage to have a family or friend present at the time of consultation. Otherwise please advice in advance and we can assist you with an interpreter service.

  • Why do I need to bring a referral?

If you do not have a current referral for your visit you will not be able to claim the Medicare rebate for your visit. Your GP will provide you with a referral on request, this is valid for twelve months. Please fax prior to your appointment or bring with you on the day.

What will it cost me to see one of the Urology Sydney consultants?

The cost of the consultation will depend if it is an initial, follow up or second opinion appointment. You will be quoted an estimation of fees at the time of booking your appointment. All consultation fees are payable on the day of your appointment.

  • What do I need to bring to my appointment?

To assist us in streamlining your initial visit to our practice you should bring the following to your appointment:

    • Current GP or specialist referral
